Currency:
Visa – Passport: For the citizens of Schengen countries and for citizens of the following countries no visa is required for a stay of maximum 90 days: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, United States of America, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela. Border Crossing: Open borders with Austria, Czech, Poland and Hungary. Expect delays at Ukraine borders (mostly from Ukraine side).
Driving License: EU citizens just need a European driving license. Non EU citizens must have an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Insurance: Green cards are being accepted. Third party insurance is compulsory.
Time Zone: GMT +1
Banks: ATMS (“bankomat” in Slovak, pl. “bankomaty”) can be found in many places in Slovakia except from smaller villages so there is no real problem in withdrawing money. In most small villages you can take money at local post offices (cash back). Credit cards and debit cards such as Visa, Master Card, Visa Electron and Cirrus Maestro are widely accepted both in shops and restaurants in big cities.
Fuel: Unleaded 95 (Benzin 95): ~1,19€ (12/2020). There are a lot of fuel stations in cities and on the national roads. Some of them stay open overnight. Credit cards are widely accepted.
Lights: Mandatory 24h a day.
Equipment: Drivers and passengers must wear crash helmets.
Maximum Allowed Blood Alcohol Level: 0,00%
Speed Limits: 130 km/h motorways and expressways, 90 km/h outside towns/villages and 50 km/h inside towns/villages.
Parking: Parking is always on the right hand side except on one-way streets where you can park on the left side. Most cities permit parking in designated car parks only.
Fines: The police are empowered to issue on-the-spot fines. Ensure that you get a receipt from the officer issuing the fine.
Speed Traps: Usually near the borders. It can be seen from far away hanging over the road.
Tolls: Motorcycles don’t pay.
